KRPA is a non-profit, professional corporation dedicated to the promotion of healthy lifestyles in Kansas communities through the wise use of recreation and stewardship of parks and natural resources.  KRPA is comprised of citizens and park and recreation professionals who serve millions of Kansas and tourists at parks, open spaces and recreation facilities, and through healthy programs for children, adults and senior citizens.

New Partnership Creates Blue CHIP Awards Program To Promote Healthy Kansas Communities

The members of KRPA - who are dedicated to the promotion of healthy lifestyles in Kansas communities -  and the state’s largest health insurer have announced a new business partnership aimed at creating a healthier state by improving the quality of life for Kansans. Citing a common desire to make Kansas a healthy, happy place to live and work, KRPA and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) have forged a new partnership, resulting in the creation of a community awards program. BlueCHIP® is a community health improvement program created to recognize and reward Kansas communities who encourage and support healthy lifestyles through programs, initiatives, policies and/or community-wide events.

KRPA Announces Award Winners

Bill Katzenberger (Leavenworth), Steve Snyder (Salina), John Knight (Shawnee County), Jalinda Blanding (Gardner) along with Sen. Laura Kelly and Sen. Vickie Schmidt headline the list of awards winners honored during the 2010 KRPA Conference and Trade Show. KRPA honors achievements and significant contributions to park and recreation in Kansas for individuals or organizations in 10 categories during its annual Awards Luncheon.The winners were selected from nominations submitted to the KRPA Awards Committee from members throughout the state.  The KRPA Executive Committee selects hall of fame recipients.

Salina Youth Baseball Team Selected for KRPA Youth Sports Team Award

The Salina CNB Southeast Trojans baseball team has been named as recipient of the fourth annual SSCI Youth Sports STAR Award, selected by the KRPA Youth Sports Committee. The team competes in the 10 and under youth baseball league in Salina and is coached by Mike Garretson.The team was nominated by the Salina Parks and Recreation Department and the Salina Area Youth Sportsmanship Initiative.

KRPA Conference Format Trimmed to Three Days Starting in 2011

The KRPA Board of Directors voted at its meeting in November to reduce the annual KRPA Conference and Trade Show from four days to three days as a one-year experiment.  The action came as a result of a membership-wide survey which indicated that the majority of members favored a three-day conference format. The board authorized executive director Doug Vance to begin negotiations with the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Wichita to adjust the room-night commitment for the 2011 conference with the intention of moving it to the three-day concept.  The board decided to review the results of a three-day conference before making a commitment to the concept in future years.

 

Four Receive Grants for Educational Training

The KRPA Scholarship Committee selected four KRPA members to receive professional development financial assistance through the Larry Heeb Professional Development Grant Fund.  Those selected to receive grants include:
-- Brian Toby (Shawnee County Parks and Recreation) to attend the National Alliance for Youth Sports Congress in Orlando, Fla. in December;
-- Tammy Hodges (Eudora Recreation Commission), Scott Nichols (Grant County Recreation Commission) and Warren McCoskey (Wichita Parks and Recreation), to attend the 2010 KRPA Conference and Trade Show.
Grants are made available to KRPA members throughout the year to attend NRPA Congress, the KRPA Conference and other state or national workshops.  Their selection is made by the KRPA Scholarship Committee.

   

2010 KRPA Board Members Announced

The 2010 KRPA Board of Directors will welcome Mike Buchanan (Manhattan Parks and Recreation), Connie Smith (Emporia Recreation Commission) and John Washington (Garden City Recreation Commission) as its new officers. The trio of newcomers were selected in a vote of the KRPA membership and will be sworn in during the closing ceremony at the 2010 KRPA Conference and Trade Show, Jan. 29, in Topeka.

Scholarship Opportunities for Members

KRPA members are encouraged to take advantage of an opportunity to apply for scholarship support to attend regional or national schools, KRPA workshops, NRPA Congress or the KRPA Conference and Trade Show. Each year, the KRPA Scholarship Committee – which consists of members of the association executive committee – will review applications from KRPA members/agencies for funding support through the Larry Heeb Professional Development Scholarship Fund to attend educational events.

KRPA Partners With SSCI for Background Checks

KRPA is undertaking a new initiative with SSCI, a national partner with the National Recreation and Parks Association to help insure the safety and protection of those we serve by providing background screening at a special rate! KRPA has entered into a partnership agreement with SSCI, a national corporation which has extensive background and experience in conducting criminal background checks.
