Doug Vance, Executive Director

Kansas Recreation and Park Association

Vance began his duties in July, 2004 as just the second director in KRPA history. He replaced Laura Kelly, who now serves as a state senator in the Kansas legislature. Prior to his appointment, Vance worked 20 years as an administrator in the University of Kansas athletics department. He served 18 years as assistant athletics director for media relations and the final two years as associate athletics director for communications. He is a past president of the College Sports Information Directors of America and was inducted into the organization's hall of fame in 2000. Vance has authored three books about Kansas athletics - "Max and the Jayhawks," a book about radio announcer Max Falkenstien, "Beware of the Phog, 50 Years of Allen Fieldhouse" and "What It Means to be a Jayhawk." Vance is also a freelance writer and contributes articles for local community magazines in Lawrence and Topeka.

Vance serves as a member of the Governor's Child Health Advisory Committee, on the executive committee of the Kansas Enrichment Network and is board president of the Sunflower State Games in Kansas. He's also been active with his community parks and recreation agency, serving on a citizen's committee called PLAY (Partners for Lawrence Athletics and Youth) that is involved in a feasibility study of recreation facilities in the community. Vance also edits "KRPA Today" which serves as the association's official magazine.

He and his wife, Sue, have two sons and four grandsons.


Bonnie Simon, Membership/Education Services Coordinator

Bonnie has worked eleven years at the KRPA Headquarters and has 24 years of experience working for non-profit associations. Her duties include membership services and the directory; KRPA Job Center Online; Workshop promotions and signage; KRPA Annual Conference and Trade Show Registrations; Manage the Aquatic Facility Operator and National Playground Safety certification courses; Manage the KRPA hotel room block for the NRPA Congress; Purchase office supplies and computer equipment; Administrative services for the Professional Certification Board, and Kansas Park Law Enforcement Association.
