From the President-Elect

Dear members of the Kansas Recreation and Park Association:

Thank you very much for instilling your trust in me to serve as your President in 2008. I am humbled and flattered that you have selected me for this distinct honor.

One of our first items of business in 2008 will be the unveiling and implementation of the new KRPA Strategic Plan. I am very excited about the opportunity to lead the Association through the implementation as this Plan that will set the tone for many years to come. The Plan addresses various goals for the Association, including topics such as vision and mission, efficiency and effectiveness, services, communication, benefits of parks and recreation, fiscal sustainability, and accountability.

Through all of the hard work exhibited in developing the Plan it became obvious that the 2006 and 2007 Board of Directors and the Strategic Plan Committee care about you, our profession and leading all of us into the future. Please thank them for their time and efforts the next time you see them.

The Plan aside, many other positive things have happened over the past year. The Association met its goal of offering a record of educational/training opportunities in 2007. As identified in the member survey, educational and networking opportunities are high priorities for our members and I look forward to working with Branch Chairs and KRPA staff to continue our efforts in this area.

The Association has made vast improvements in student participation and I encourage you to continue to involve our young professionals in your communities. Provide internships at your agency when possible; take a student to lunch at the conference; and be a mentor to our young professionals - as they are quickly becoming our future.

Lastly, please look around at the wealth of knowledge that our professional peers and leader's possess. Most recently we have seen the retirement of several well-respected and distinguished professionals. As they embark on new and deserving journeys, they take with them a great deal knowledge. Make sure you tap that wealth of knowledge as much as possible.

In closing, as we look forward to 2008 with hope and excitement, remember the purpose of our profession. Whatever your position and/or level with your organization, we all have one common goal and that is to serve our public and provide park and recreational opportunities for everyone to enjoy. No one person can do this alone and no one person is more important; we all must work together to achieve our common goal.

Sincerely,

Dawn Grosdidier, CPRP
