Park Trail Design, Construction, and Maintenance Workshop

Water trails are becoming an increasingly popular way for communities to connect people with the outdoors, promote recreation and tourism, and showcase natural resources. Whether your agency is interested in developing a paddling program, enhancing access to local waterways, or learning more about managing water trails, this workshop is designed for you.

Join fellow parks and recreation professionals for a day focused on the opportunities and practical considerations of water trail development. Learn from experts about launching paddling programs, safety and liability, equipment needs, partnerships, funding opportunities, and best practices for creating enjoyable experiences on the water.

9:30 AM – 11:30 AM | Water Trails Education Session (City of Manhattan – Municipal Services Facility, 1000 Levee Drive)
Speaker: Dawn Buehler, Kansas Riverkeeper & Executive Director, Friends of the Kaw

11:30 AM – 12:15 PM | Lunch

12:30 PM – 3:00 PM | On-the-Water Experience (Tuttle Creek State Park – River Pond Area)
Led by: Chelsea Hofmeier, KDWP Boating Specialist
Continue the day's learning with a hands-on outdoor experience. Participants who choose the paddling option will receive basic paddling instruction before enjoying time on the water using kayaks provided by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and Tuttle Creek State Park. All kayaks and personal flotation devices (PFDs) will be provided. Prefer to stay on land? Join Ethan Huston, Nature Education Coordinator with Hutchinson Recreation, for a guided trail hike and explore another way communities can connect people with nature through their trail systems.
